The genesis of The Essential Ingredient in Sydney was an inspired Aladdin’s Cave warehouse in Australia Street, Camperdown, way back in 1985. The store bought the very best of everything to do with cooking and food together in the one place and it became quickly became the haunt of the cooks and chefs of the time who were driving the emergence of a new food scene, were hungry for knowledge and excited to experiment.
Fast forward 20 years and a smaller, retail store opens in Crows Nest, on the lower North Shore. That’s us. Sydney real estate has seen us move twice since then - under the stewardship of the same owner and with some of the same team – to Rozelle in 2010 and then again to Surry Hills in 2019.
