Teens can learn to make a Middle Eastern feast including spicy chicken skewers, hummus, tzatziki, flat bread and tabbouleh at The Essential Ingredient Newcastle Cooking School this Easter.

Banish school holiday boredom with our classes for kids and teens at The Essential Ingredient Newcastle Cooking School this Easter break. Don’t be alarmed but Friday April 7 is the last day of term in NSW, and it won’t be long after that when the complaints start – “There’s nothing to do”.

Plan ahead now and book the kids in for some messy fun in our kitchen rather than yours. They’ll have a ball and can even lighten the load in the kitchen if you’ll be entertaining the family over Easter.

It all starts on Monday April 10 when children aged 8 and up can learn how to make fruit-free hot cross buns and  decorate Easter-themed cupcakes. Class starts at 9.30am .

The Egg-tastic for Easter class for kids aged 12 and over focuses on the humble (non chocolate) egg. Kids will learn how to make egg dishes including frittatas, Portuguese custard tarts, home-made mayonnaise and bacon and eggs in filo pastry in this two and half hour class. It’s on Tuesday April 11 at 9.30am.

That afternoon, in the Easter Treats class, kids can learn how to make hot cross buns from scratch, and a delicious carrot cake with a difference.

On Wednesday April 12, teens can try their hand at Middle Eastern cooking, with a morning session featuring spicy chicken skewers, hummus, tzatziki, flat bread and tabbouleh, and an afternoon class of Turkish street food, making gozleme, the crispy yoghurt based flatbread filled with spiced lamb or spinach and feta, followed by our baklava with a twist.

If fish is on your menu for Good Friday, we have some fast 60 minute classes on Thursday April 13.

At 10am, children aged 10 and over will master prawn cutlets, including peeling, deveining crumbing and frying. And they’ll learn the secrets of top notch tartare sauce.

Come high noon, it will be Thai fish cakes and pickled ginger mayonnaise for 12-year-olds and up, and at 2pm teenagers will make crumbed fish burgers and herb mayonnaise that will put the local hamburger shop to shame.
