The Melbourne operation commenced in 1990 trading as The Vital Ingredient in South Melbourne whilst its Sydney counterpart traded as The Essential Ingredient. In 2002 the store relocated to Prahran Market, Melbourne’s oldest food only market, to a much more expansive site and changed its trading name to The Essential Ingredient as part of a national alliance with Sydney.

The wholesale arm of the business has been servicing Victoria’s restaurant trade and elite chefs for well over twenty years and is widely considered to hold expert knowledge of the world’s best single ingredients.

In addition to specialty foods, cookware and culinary books, which The Essential Ingredient is well known for, the Melbourne store has a highly respected cooking school and has, since 1997, been at the cutting edge, teaching enthusiastic home cooks who want to shop where chefs shop. Today our Prahran store is jointly owned and led by its directors, Maria Tsihlakis and Susan Weddell.

Knife sharpening service in store. Drop off knives first or third Tuesday in each month and collect the following day. Check in store for further details.
